The Animal Health Trust has made the Cord 1 PRA test available to owners of Miniature Wire Dachshunds since 1st January 2010.
They have now kindly offered to test a “research sample” of Miniature Wires to try to estimate the frequency of the mutation within the variety. To date there has been one “affected” dog and some “carriers” tested so the Cord1 mutation is clearly in the Miniature Wire population, albeit in a very small way.
The Animal Health Trust is willing to do this testing free of charge and would report back breed statistics anonymously to the Breed Council as this data will help the Trust and the Breed Council determine the best advice for breeders to follow. Owners can receive their individual results.
The testing needs to be done on 50 different dogs, by 50 different sires out of 50 different dams. By testing this number of relatively unrelated dogs a fairly good estimate will be obtained of the frequency of the mutation within the breed.
Anybody willing to have their dogs tested should contact the co-ordinator Judy Squires (Miniature Dachshund Club) at Tel. No. 01480 462813 or email squires@wirehall.freeserve.co.uk
Please state your name, address and telephone number – as the testing kits will be sent direct from the Animal Health Trust to the owner – also the full name of the dog to be tested and the name of the sire and dam and whether it is of English, Continental or other breeding, as a good cross-section is required.
The names of those participating and details of their dogs will be kept confidential and will only be recorded by the co-ordinator and the AHT.

Dachshund Breed Council Newsletter for May 2010
The May 2010 Newsletter contains details of how you can participate in two research programmes:
cord1 (PRA) in Mini Wire Dachshunds
Epilepsy
Both programmes are being run by the Animal Health Trust and require cheek swab samples. The MW cord1 programme is being co-ordinated by Judy Squires of the Miniature Dachshund Club.
Kits to provide samples to add to the epilepsy research programme can be obtained directly from the AHT – full details are in the Newsletter.
PLEASE NOTE:
The epilepsy research referred to here is not Lafora’s testing. It is Idiopathic Epilepsy research. They are collecting samples to try to find the gene(s) causing epilepsy. If you want Lafora’s tests, please contact the Wire Club.

Two Couch Potatoes, Two Dachshunds, 4 Miles.
Joy and I have entered the Neolithic Canicross event on May 2nd this year. Joy is taking a mini long Pebbles, I'm hoping to take Isaac (have a JRT as back up - the boy at the moment is being far too well behaved to pull forward as needed) and we have a four mile run from the Bustard Inn to Stonehenge.
We are looking for sponsors. Monies will be split equally between Daxaid and Roots Nursery School
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/sunsong/sda/daxaid.htm and http://rootsnurseryschool.org/
We will be up against all these superfit chaps and chapesses with their wonderful Malamutes etc, and neither of us really are in any fit shape (unless you count round. Round is a shape**) so we are badly in need of some added incentive in the way of at least being able to reflect that we raised lots of cash for good causes while we count our blisters afterwards!
You can sponsor us for Daxaid and Roots through paypal via the paypal address canixfunds@hushmail.com or we would be very happy to take a cheque or postal order at our home addresses. If you send a cheque or PO please add an address so we can send a receipt and a thank you. Both of us will be at WELKS (just before the race) and the National (just after)though we may still be hobbling and not speaking to each other at the National...

**Sorry Joy - I owed you that one

Lafora testing for Mini Wire Dachshunds
The WHDC will be arranging a saliva testing session at our Limited Show at Horspath on Saturday 27th March, 2010. Swab samples will be taken from the mouth, and sent to Canada for testing, so results will not be available immediately.
The test will cost £50 per dog, and at first will be limited to members (there are no restrictions on membership) as the Club will be subsidising the costs. The Club would like to encourage all miniature wire haired dachshund owners to have their dogs tested, if they are planning to breed from them, so that affected or subclinically affected dogs can be identified. The parents and offspring of any dogs identified by the test as affected would then be known to be either affected, or carriers, with no testing necessary.
Ideally, those dogs identified by the test as affected should be removed from the breeding pool, immediately reducing the incidence of Lafora’s disease. The Club hopes to test enough dogs to help identify the incidence of the disease in the miniature wire population.
Anyone interested in having their dog tested at Horspath should contact Lesley Patton on 07736-431090 (after 8pm only), email:lpatton@lesandnic.fsnet.co.uk, or come to the WHDC stand at Crufts. Tests will need to be booked – on a first come first served basis – and KC registration documents will have to be produced for each dog tested.
Lesley Patton; email: lpatton@lesandnic.fsnet.co.uk phone: 07736431090
For more information on Laforas in mini wires please visit http://www.laforas.org/

Dachshund Poem
Hannah my wire is loving and funny,
she should be, my mum said
"she cost a lot of money"
She hears the fridge open,
from miles can smell cheese,
and look with those eyes,
Can I have some more please?
She may not be tall,
but makes up with long,
is small and is wonderful
and makes right what is wrong.
There are three dachs in this house,
two have long hair,
its time for another wire
it only seems fair
An time comes around,
its time for my bed,
'Oh yes' Hannah says
that looks perfect,
ill sleep on mums head.

A) You can't have favourites!! They're all special in different ways and each with their own personality
Q) What first brought you into dachshunds?
A) My nan bred dachshunds for about 20 years or so, I used to love going to visit to see them and loved it when she had puppies too and from there i was hooked! My nan had a good friend who had mini wires, and one particular one called smiler who was just adorable and that just made me want them even more.

Q) If you had one dream involving your dachshunds what would it be?
A) I would love to go on and sucessfully show dogs I have bred, other than that would just like many more, 101 dachshunds maybe!
Q) Whats the naughtiest thing your dachshund(s) have ever done?
A) Too many to mention!! One particular episode involved the mighty Lola chasing my landlords chickens, all but one got out of her reach and she corned this poor chicken, luckily I got to her before she done any damage. Lola also chased some chickens down some remote country lane recently, my partner had to go chasing after her, they both ended up in a ditch full of nettles, Lola loved the chase, Steve not so much!
